Marie Owen (RN, MSCN) was appointed to the board of the Health Quality Council of Alberta in June 2016, is a member of the Quality Assurance Committee, and serves as a Board liaison to the Patient and Family Advisory Committee. Ms. Owen has an extensive background in healthcare. Ms. Owen was responsible for quality improvement and patient safety within a large regional health authority in Alberta.
Most recently, she joined the Canadian Patient Safety Institute in 2008 as Director of Operations, where she was responsible for the Safer Healthcare Now! Campaign as well as other national initiatives to improve the safety of our healthcare system. During this time she worked as the National Co-Lead for Medication Reconciliation for Canada. Having retired from the Canadian Patient Safety Institute in 2015, Ms. Owen now works as a consultant with Accreditation Canada International as well as other healthcare organizations. Ms. Owen began her career as a Registered Nurse in a number of acute care hospitals in Ontario before moving to Edmonton, where she worked as a clinical nurse specialist in critical care. She then assumed the role of educator, as well as administrator for a small rural facility. Ms. Owen has held the role of surveyor for Accreditation Canada and conducted peer reviews of healthcare organizations across Canada and internationally. Ms. Owen graduated from St. Joseph’s School of Nursing in Guelph, Ontario and holds a Master of Science in Nursing from the University of Alberta.
